Abstract

AbstractSome researchers state that Visual Display Terminal (VDT) users are a group of workers who are exposed to mental health diseases. Mental illness refers to mental disorders such as stress, fatigue, anger, depression, unsatisfactory work, etc. Consequently, workers' productivity will decrease, and their emotions will be unstable, thus reducing their safety and health. Applying ergonomics knowledge in the work environment reduces mental health risks. This study focuses on the effect of ergonomics in work systems on mental health among VDT users in one of Indonesia's manufacturing industries. This research is divided into two methods. First, a survey was conducted to identify the level of ergonomics awareness, the level of implementation of the ergonomics program and the proportion of ergonomics time. Second, case studies were conducted in two industries. This study aimed to determine the effect of ergonomics in the work system on the mental health of VDT workers using observation and questionnaire methods. The results show that ergonomics awareness in the manufacturing industry is still moderate. Lack of information, knowledge and training on ergonomics is the main factor that hinders organizations from implementing ergonomics programs. Meanwhile, the industry's application level of ergonomics programs still needs to improve. Only 13.3% of respondents manage ergonomics teams in the industry. The results of the case studies show that the application of ergonomics to the Tool factor will have a major influence on respondents' mental health in providing job satisfaction and improving performance, safety and health.
