THE PREVENTION AND MANAGEMENT OF SEXUAL VIOLENCE: A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW
Abstract
Sexual violence in Indonesia's religious educational institutions has emerged as a critical issue, undermining student safety and the moral integrity these schools represent. Reports of abuse by educators and authority figures highlight the urgent need for effective interventions. This study examines the multifaceted nature of sexual violence in these settings, considering individual beliefs, interpersonal relationships, cultural norms, and societal structures. Utilizing the ecological framework, the research aims to explore how cultural, religious, and institutional factors influence the prevention and management of sexual violence. A systematic literature review of 26 scholarly articles was conducted. Findings reveal that prevention programs are most effective when they are comprehensive, culturally sensitive, and involve key stakeholders like religious leaders and community members. Cultural norms and power dynamics significantly impact implementation, with challenges including stigma, resource limitations, and institutional reluctance. Opportunities exist in collaborating with civil society organizations and integrating sexuality education aligned with religious teachings. The study concludes that holistic, culturally sensitive strategies are essential for addressing sexual violence in Indonesia's religious educational institutions. Recommendations include strengthening policy enforcement, restructuring institutional power dynamics to promote transparency, enhancing education on sexual rights within religious frameworks, and fostering collaborations to improve support for survivors. Adopting an ecological approach can help develop interventions that address root causes and create safer educational environments.
