THE EFFECTIVENESS OF HILAL OBSERVATION ACTIVITIES IN IMPROVING STUDENTS' UNDERSTANDING OF DETERMINING THE BEGINNING OF THE HIJRI MONTH

Abstract


This study aims to examine the effectiveness of hilal observation activities in enhancing students’ understanding of the determination of the beginning of the Hijri month. Hilal observation is an essential component of Islamic astronomy, as it integrates theoretical knowledge of hisab with direct rukyat practices. This research employed a descriptive quantitative method using a questionnaire distributed to 30 students of the Ilmu Falak study program who had participated in hilal observation activities. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistical techniques, including frequency distribution, graphical presentation, and measures of central tendency and data dispersion. The results indicate that the mean score was 44, the median was 46.2, and the mode was 47.63, indicating that students’ understanding was at a good to very good level. The standard deviation of 5.33 and variance of 28.4 suggest that the data distribution was relatively homogeneous and consistent. These findings demonstrate that hilal observation activities are effective in improving students’ understanding of the determination of the Hijri month and play a significant role in strengthening applied learning in Islamic astronomy.
