DEVELOPING POSITIVE SELF-CONCEPT IN EARLY CHILDHOOD THROUGH ISLAMIC EDUCATION: A GUIDANCE AND COUNSELING APPROACH

Uli Makmun Hasibuan

Abstract

Developing a positive self-concept in early childhood is a fundamental aspect of personality formation that influences emotional, social, and moral development. Islamic education plays a significant role in shaping children’s self-concept by instilling faith-based values, moral conduct, and a sense of identity rooted in Islamic teachings. This study aims to examine how Islamic education contributes to the development of a positive self-concept in early childhood from a guidance and counseling perspective. The research employs a literature review method by analyzing relevant national and international journal articles, books, and empirical studies published within the last decade. The findings indicate that Islamic education fosters positive self-concept through value internalization, role modeling, habituation of religious practices, and supportive teacher–child interactions. Furthermore, guidance and counseling approaches in early childhood education emphasize preventive and developmental services that strengthen children’s self-awareness, self-esteem, and social adjustment in accordance with Islamic principles. Integrating Islamic educational values with guidance and counseling strategies can effectively support holistic child development. This study concludes that Islamic education, when aligned with guidance and counseling approaches, plays a crucial role in nurturing a positive self-concept in early childhood.
