Abstract

Abstract: This study aims to analyze the implementation of Design Thinking in designing ice breaking activities to enhance student engagement at SMA Negeri 1 Rantau Utara. This research employed a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, and analyzed using thematic analysis. The ice breaking design process followed the Design Thinking stages, namely empathize, define, ideate, prototype, and test. The findings indicate that ice breaking activities designed based on students’ needs are able to improve behavioral, emotional, and cognitive engagement in learning. Students became more active, enthusiastic, and focused after participating in the ice breaking activities. In addition, student involvement in the design process increased their sense of ownership toward learning activities. These findings suggest that Design Thinking is an effective innovative approach for designing student-centered learning strategies. Therefore, this approach is recommended for developing more interactive and meaningful learning in secondary schools.
