Anatomica Medical Journal (AMJ) recognizes that AI-assisted technologies can provide limited language-editing assistance. To protect authorship, originality, transparency, and research integrity, AMJ permits only restricted use of AI as described in this policy.
1. Permitted Use
AI-assisted tools may be used only for limited English-language correction, including grammar, spelling, punctuation, sentence structure, and basic readability, provided that the scientific meaning is not changed.
AI may not replace the authors' intellectual contribution or be used to develop the scientific substance of the manuscript.
2. Maximum Extent of AI-Assisted Editing
AI-assisted language editing must not exceed 30% of the manuscript text.
The 30% limit refers solely to text that receives AI-assisted language correction. It does not authorize authors to generate up to 30% of the scientific content with AI.
The research question, study design, methods, data, statistical analysis, results, interpretation, discussion, and conclusions must originate from the authors and/or the underlying research.
3. Prohibited Uses
l Generating or fabricating research data or results;
l Falsifying or manipulating findings;
l Generating fictitious or unverifiable references, citations, or DOI numbers;
l Writing substantive scientific sections as a substitute for the authors' intellectual contribution;
l Concealing plagiarism or duplicate publication;
l Generating misleading scientific figures, images, or evidence;
l Presenting AI-generated scientific content as original author work;
l Entering confidential, identifiable, or sensitive research information into AI systems in violation of applicable requirements.
4. Human Verification and Responsibility
Authors must critically review all AI-assisted text before submission and verify its accuracy, terminology, meaning, and suitability. The corresponding author is responsible for ensuring compliance with this policy by all authors.
5. Disclosure of AI Use
When AI-assisted technology has been used, authors should provide a transparent declaration. AMJ recommends the following wording:
“Declaration of AI-Assisted Language Editing: During the preparation of this manuscript, the authors used [NAME OF AI TOOL] solely for limited English grammar, spelling, and language correction. The scientific content, research design, data, analysis, interpretation, and conclusions were developed and verified by the authors. The authors reviewed and approved the final manuscript and take full responsibility for its content.”
If no AI-assisted technology was used: “Declaration of AI Use: The authors declare that no Artificial Intelligence (AI) or AI-assisted technology was used in the preparation of this manuscript.”
6. AI as an Author
AI systems, including Large Language Models, cannot be listed as authors or co-authors. Authorship requires human responsibility, accountability, and approval of the final work.
7. AI-Generated References
Authors are responsible for independently verifying every reference. AI-generated references may not be used unless their existence, bibliographic details, and relevance have been independently confirmed. Fabricated references are unacceptable.
8. AI and Research Data
AI must not be used to fabricate, falsify, manipulate, or selectively alter research data or results. Substantive use of AI in research analysis, statistical processing, image generation, or other research procedures must be disclosed and may be subject to additional editorial assessment.
9. Confidentiality and Privacy
Authors must protect confidential manuscripts, participant information, personal data, and unpublished research materials. Such information must not be submitted to AI systems in a manner that breaches ethical, institutional, legal, or data-protection requirements.
10. Editorial Assessment
AMJ will not treat an automated AI-detection percentage as sufficient evidence of inappropriate AI use by itself. When concerns arise, the journal may request information about the tool used, its purpose, the affected sections, the extent of editing, and the authors' verification process.
11. Non-Compliance
Depending on the nature and severity of a violation, AMJ may request clarification or revision, conduct an additional ethical assessment, reject a manuscript, withdraw an acceptance, publish a correction, retract a published article, or take another appropriate editorial action.
12. Final Responsibility
Use of AI does not transfer responsibility from the authors to the AI system, software provider, editor, journal, or publisher. Authors remain responsible for the originality, accuracy, integrity, and reliability of the entire manuscript.
13. Policy Review
AMJ may periodically review and update this policy in response to developments in AI, publication ethics, research integrity, and scholarly publishing standards.
