Abstract

Abstract: The development of social media has changed the way young people obtain and understand political information. TikTok, as a short video-based platform, has become one of the media widely used by students to access various public issues, including the September 2025 demonstrations. This study aims to analyze the role of TikTok in shaping the political awareness of 10th-grade students at SMA Negeri 3 Binjai regarding the demonstrations. The study used a qualitative approach with descriptive methods. Data were obtained through in-depth interviews with students who actively use TikTok and follow information related to the demonstrations. The results show that TikTok plays a significant role in increasing students' knowledge about the background of the demonstrations, criticism of government policies, and the function of legislative institutions. Exposure to political content on TikTok also encourages the emergence of critical attitudes, social awareness, and empathy towards public issues. However, the presence of inaccurate and provocative information poses a challenge in developing students' political awareness. Therefore, strengthening digital literacy and political literacy is necessary so that students are able to filter and interpret information critically and responsibly.
