Abstract

This study aims to analyze the psychology of the character Ompi in the short story Anak Kebanggaan (The Pride of Children) using a literary psychology approach based on Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic theory. The method used is descriptive qualitative, with the main data source being the short story text and supporting references from scientific journals. Data was collected through in-depth reading of the text, then analyzed using Freud's personality concepts, which include the id, ego, superego, and defense mechanisms. The results of the study show that Ompi experiences strong inner conflict due to his subconscious desire to gain pride through his son's success. The dominance of the id made it difficult for him to accept reality, while his weak ego and strong superego caused inner pressure that led to delusions and denial of reality. The character Ompi used several forms of defense mechanisms such as denial, rationalization, projection, and fantasy to cover up his disappointment. The end of the story shows psychological destruction due to the inability to come to terms with reality. This study concludes that the literary psychology approach is effective in understanding the psychological complexity of characters in literary works, as well as showing how literature can reflect the psychological condition of humans, which is full of conflict and hope
