Artificial Intelligence (AI) Use Policy

Artificial Intelligence (AI) Use Policy

Intiqad: Jurnal Agama dan Pendidikan Islam recognizes that artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted technologies may support certain aspects of academic research, manuscript preparation, and scholarly publishing. The journal permits the responsible and transparent use of AI tools, provided that their use does not compromise originality, research integrity, academic accountability, or the scientific validity of published work.

Authors, editors, and reviewers are responsible for ensuring that any use of AI complies with this policy, the journal's publication ethics standards, and applicable research ethics requirements.

1. Language Requirements

All manuscripts submitted to Intiqad: Jurnal Agama dan Pendidikan Islam must be written in clear, grammatically correct English. Authors are responsible for ensuring that the language is accurate, coherent, readable, and appropriate for scholarly publication.

Manuscripts containing language deficiencies that substantially impede comprehension or peer review may be returned to the authors for language revision before further consideration. Authors whose first language is not English are encouraged to have their manuscripts reviewed by a qualified language editor or professional editing service before submission.

The use of conventional spelling and grammar checking software is permitted to improve language quality. AI-assisted language editing tools may also be used within the limits specified in this policy. Authors remain responsible for checking all suggested corrections and ensuring that the meaning, arguments, data, and scientific conclusions are not altered inaccurately.

2. Acceptable Uses of AI

Authors may use AI-assisted technologies for limited and appropriate purposes that support manuscript preparation and research activities. Acceptable uses include:

  • Improving grammar, spelling, punctuation, and readability.
  • Enhancing language clarity, sentence structure, and academic writing style.
  • Formatting or organizing text without changing the scientific meaning or substantive content.
  • Assisting with coding, data visualization, and other technical tasks, provided that all outputs are carefully checked and verified by the authors.
  • Supporting other legitimate research or writing activities when the use is transparent, appropriate, and consistent with research ethics.

AI tools must be used as supporting instruments rather than substitutes for the authors' intellectual contribution, critical thinking, interpretation, analysis, or scholarly judgment.

3. Unacceptable Uses of AI

AI tools must not be used to engage in research misconduct or undermine the integrity of scholarly publication. Prohibited uses include:

  • Generating, fabricating, falsifying, or manipulating research data, results, images, tables, or other scientific evidence.
  • Creating fictitious references, quotations, sources, or research findings.
  • Producing misleading, falsified, or deceptive scientific content.
  • Replacing the authors' intellectual contribution, critical interpretation, data analysis, or scholarly judgment.
  • Generating substantial portions of a manuscript without meaningful human oversight, critical assessment, and verification.
  • Concealing plagiarism, duplicate publication, unauthorized use of copyrighted material, or other forms of academic misconduct.
  • Using AI in ways that violate participant consent, data confidentiality, privacy, research ethics, or applicable institutional requirements.

Authors must verify the accuracy, relevance, originality, and reliability of all AI-assisted outputs before incorporating them into a manuscript.

4. Disclosure Requirements

Authors must disclose the use of AI-assisted technologies when these tools have contributed to manuscript preparation beyond basic spelling, grammar, punctuation, or routine language correction. The disclosure must be included in a dedicated section entitled AI Use Statement, placed before the References, or in the Acknowledgments section where appropriate.

The disclosure should identify the AI tool and, where available, its version; explain the purpose of its use; and describe the nature and extent of its contribution. If AI tools are used for coding, data analysis, figure preparation, data visualization, or other substantive tasks, authors must clearly explain how those tools were used and how their outputs were verified.

Example of an AI Use Statement:

The authors used [AI tool name and version] to improve the language and readability of this manuscript. All scientific content, data interpretation, analyses, and conclusions were developed and verified by the authors, who accept full responsibility for the manuscript.

For substantive technical use, authors should adapt the statement to accurately describe the specific tasks performed by the AI tool and the verification procedures applied.

If no disclosure is required because AI was not used beyond basic language editing, authors should follow the journal's submission instructions. Authors must not make a false declaration about their use of AI.

5. Authorship and Accountability

AI tools and large language models, including ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, and similar systems, do not meet the criteria for authorship and must not be listed as authors or co-authors.

Only individuals who satisfy the journal's authorship requirements may be designated as authors. All listed authors remain responsible for the originality, accuracy, integrity, and scientific validity of the submitted work, including any content generated, revised, or analyzed with the assistance of AI tools.

Authors must ensure that all sources are properly acknowledged, that references are genuine and accurate, and that the final manuscript reflects responsible scholarly judgment.

6. Use of AI by Editors

Editors may use appropriate AI-assisted technologies for limited administrative or technical support, provided that such use complies with the journal's confidentiality, privacy, and editorial policies.

AI tools must not replace human editorial judgment or independently determine whether a manuscript should be accepted or rejected. Editorial decisions must be made by the responsible editors based on scholarly quality, originality, relevance, reviewers' recommendations, and compliance with publication ethics.

Editors must protect the confidentiality of submitted manuscripts and must not upload unpublished manuscripts or confidential editorial information to external AI systems where doing so could expose protected content or violate the journal's policies.

7. Use of AI by Reviewers

Reviewers must conduct their assessments independently and maintain the confidentiality of the double-blind peer-review process. Manuscripts, unpublished findings, and confidential review materials must not be uploaded to public or third-party AI tools when doing so could compromise confidentiality or violate the journal's policies.

AI tools must not replace reviewers' independent scholarly judgment. Reviewers remain responsible for the accuracy, fairness, relevance, and integrity of their review reports and must comply with any applicable disclosure requirements established by the journal.

8. Editorial Assessment and Policy Violations

Editors may request additional information or clarification regarding the use of AI during manuscript preparation, research, or analysis. Concerns about undisclosed AI use, fabricated content, plagiarism, or other potential violations will be assessed in accordance with the journal's publication ethics policies.

Failure to disclose material AI use, the submission of fabricated or misleading AI-generated content, or other unethical use of AI may result in one or more of the following actions, depending on the nature and seriousness of the violation:

  • A request for clarification or additional documentation from the authors.
  • A request to revise the manuscript or provide an appropriate AI Use Statement.
  • Rejection of the manuscript before publication.
  • Correction or retraction of a published article when justified by the evidence and applicable editorial policies.
  • Other appropriate actions in accordance with the journal's publication ethics procedures.

AI-detection tools alone are not sufficient to establish misconduct. Editorial decisions must take into account the available evidence, the circumstances of the case, and the authors' explanation.

9. Research Integrity and Confidentiality

All authors, editors, and reviewers must ensure that the use of AI respects intellectual property, data protection, confidentiality, research participant rights, and applicable ethical standards. AI-generated content must be reviewed critically to identify inaccuracies, bias, unsupported claims, fabricated citations, and other potential errors.

Authors conducting research involving human participants or personal data remain responsible for obtaining appropriate ethical approval, informed consent, and data-protection safeguards, regardless of whether AI tools are used.

10. Policy Updates

Intiqad: Jurnal Agama dan Pendidikan Islam may update this policy in response to developments in AI technologies, research practices, scholarly publishing standards, and publication ethics guidance. Authors, editors, and reviewers are expected to comply with the version of the policy applicable to their submission or editorial activity.

This policy is intended to encourage responsible innovation while protecting academic integrity, transparency, human accountability, and public trust in scholarly publishing.
